FISHING IN AUSTRALIA

The Brisbane River Classic is an annual fishing tournament held on the Brisbane River in Queensland. The BRC as it is known, is usually held in the months of November or December annually and is the only fishing tournament to be held on the Brisbane River. In 2008, the tournament saw the changing of the Longest Shark and Longest Catfish categories, into the “Photo and Release” categories. Other categories are the “Longest Bream, Best Miscellaneous and Junior BRC (Best Miscellaneous)”. The 2009 tournament then saw the introduction of a new popular category, which is known as the “Longest King Threadfin”.

This tournament has sparked debate in the 2007, with the winning entry for the Heaviest Shark, a record-sized 2.9m bull shark. It is believed that the shark was the largest caught shark in the river to date. This massive shark was weighed; however the scale registered to only 200 kg and is estimated to have been 250 kg to 300 kg. The tournament has now introduced a strict “Photo and Release” entry methods.

The Moreton Bay Classic is an annual fishing tournament that is run by Brisbane Fishing Online. This tournament commonly known as the “MBC” is held in Moreton Bay, in South Eastern area of Queensland. It is being held in the month of May. It is now a 2 day event, longer than the previous year's 1 day event. In 2009, the tournament saw the event expand from only 2 prize categories to 8. In 2010, the tournament saw the prize categories re-evaluated. There are now 5 categories that provided fierce competition between the anglers.

The tournament is also a “Photo and Release” event, whereby no fish are required to be removed from the location they are caught. This has been praised by local conservationists and nature lovers abroad. A photo is then taken of the fish. Fish can then be released following responsible fishing guidelines encouraged by the “Queensland Fisheries’ Survival Guide”. This is why this tournament is one of the leading fishing tournaments in Australia that is promoting sustainable and healthy fishing practices.

The Lake Moondarra Fishing Classic is another annual Queensland fishing tournament that is held at Lake Moondarra in Mount Isa, Queensland. It is held in the final full weekend in October, starting on the Friday afternoon and ending on Sunday.

The event is currently being hosted by the Mount Isa Fish Stocking Group, which is a non-profit volunteer organisation, whose primary focus is the development of fresh water recreational fishing in the lakes around Mount Isa area

Funds raised from the event are then used to stock the lakes with Barramundi and sooty Grunter.

The tournament was create by the Mount Isa Fish Stocking Group, to encourage keen anglers and the community to utilize the local lakes for recreational and entertainment purposes.

The first competition was held on the weekend of December 12, 1999 and 457 seven (457) competitors and 208 fish weighed in with the biggest being a 3.62 kilogram catfish - the current record is a 26 kilogram barramundi.
